I play guitar and drums at the same time

I’m Joki Luz, an independent musician and visual artist. My creative passion lies currently in playing guitar and drums simultaneously, using techniques I’ve honed over years of practice. This approach lets me craft multilayered music in real time, unbound by the limitations of backing tracks or loopers. It’s also my way of redefining the consept of a "one-man band"—shifting it from being a gimmic into a genuine, serious form of musical expression.

A short origin story

My guitar techniques draw heavily from flamenco, which I studied years ago. I always heard the percussive "golpes"—taps on the guitar body—as snare-like hits, and the foot-tapping as a kick drum. Around the same time, I was experimenting with piezo pickups and using electronic samples on acoustic drums. One day, I attached a piezo on my guitar to use those snare-like taps as triggers for snare drum samples on a drum module. Then I added an electronic kick pad for my right foot, and an acoustic hi-hat for my left. Last but not least, a bass octaver effect pedal for the lower strings. This became the core setup I still use today. At first, it felt nearly impossible to coordinate, but I stuck with it since I knew there was something interesting waiting to emerge. Now, after nearly a decade, it’s become my most natural and exhilarating way to play music. Endlessly challenging, with music flowing freely, constantly evolving.

My work

I create videos of my live performances, merging sound and visuals. With a lo-fi aesthetic, multi-camera angles, green screen, and editing tricks like videocamera feedback and VCR textures, the visuals echo the music’s energy.Short clips go on Instagram, longer ones are in the Video -section.Albums are available on Bandcamp and Audio -section.On Patreon, I share full-length music videos, behind-the-scenes docs, setup insights, tutorials, and music philosophy. You can also support on Ko-fi.As an artist I’m fully independent—no labels or industry backing— with fan support, I can keep creative control and push forward.Joki Luz
